ANIMAL FARM
What’s
new about Animal Farm more than 60 years after it was first published?
All
and nothing.
Is
its role, that of an ever present, an ever actual question mark on our times and
our society?
Yes.
Ask
yourselves questions, as long as you have doubts, your free will is not in
danger: is this the message it wants to communicate?
Well,
maybe yes.
Along
with a feeling of sadness, although the representation is somewhat playful,
these are some of the thoughts and arguments aroused by the play, based upon
George Orwell’s novel and interpreted on the stage of Teatro Carcano by the
company Palkettostage.
The
power of communication, so important nowadays, with its deceitful character
confronts us here: the 7 commandments of Napoleon, the pig who takes charge of
Mr Jones’ farm, change from time to time according to Napoleon’s whims, that
are supported by his spokesperson (‘’spokespig’’, shall we say) Squealer,
who is often the first to doubt what he says.
In
this sort of allegorical fairy tale for grown up human beings, animals (every
species being a different class), become like men if they give in to the greed
for power, as we see by the end of the story. Irony is easy here: we’re worse
than animals when it is all about power… There! Nothing new, and again nothing
more actual. The most obvious concepts are the most difficult to seize, even
though after the rebellion, life in the Animal Farm is harder than before, maybe
than ever, because all the ideals have been shattered, betrayed and the animal
sing their anthem, which should be a song of freedom, as if they were mourning.
And they will mourn poor Boxer, the hardest working horse in the farm, whose
motto is ‘’I will work harder’’ and ‘’Napoleon is always right’’.
From his death they will learn what it means to renounce one’s free will …
never stick to somebody else’s ideas without questioning …
Let
George Orwell communicate to us his vision of the modern world, let us listen to
him again, again, and again …Already aware of our being slow witted our latin
ancestors said: repetita iuvant.
LA
FATTORIA DEGLI ANIMALI
Che
c’è di nuovo ne La fattoria degli Animali oltre 60 anni dopo la sua prima
uscita?
Tutto
e niente.
Il
suo ruolo è quello di un punto di domanda sui nostri tempi e la nostra società,
sempre presente e sempre attuale?
Sì.
Ponetevi
dei quesiti, sino a che avrete dei dubbi il vostro libero arbitrio non sarà in
pericolo: è questo il messaggio che vuole comunicare?
Beh,
probabilmente sì.
Assieme
a una certa tristezza, sebbene la rappresentazione sia in qualche modo giocosa,
questi sono i pensieri e i ragionamenti provocati dalla piece, basata sul
racconto di George Orwell e portata sul palcoscenico del Teatro Carcano dalla
compagnia Palkettostage.
Ci
si para davanti qui il potere della comunicazione, così importante oggigiorno,
con il suo carattere ingannevole: i 7 comandamenti di Napoleon, il maiale che si
mette a dirigere la fattoria del Sig, Jones, cambiano di volta in volta, secondo
i capricci di Napoleon stesso, supportati dal suo portavoce (o ‘’portagrugnito’’?)
Squealer, che è spesso il primo a dubitare delle proprie parole.
In una sorta di favola allegorica per adulti, gli animali (ogni specie rappresenta una classe) diventano uguali agli uomini se cedono alla fame di potere, come vediamo alla fine della storia. L’ironia è facile qui: siamo peggio degli animali quando si tratta del potere… Ecco! Niente di nuovo, eppure niente di più attuale. I concetti più ovvi sono i più difficili da afferrare, sebbene dopo la ribellione la vita alla Fattoria sia più dura di prima, anzi più dura che mai, perché gli ideali sono stati infranti, traditi, e gli animali cantano il loro inno, che dovrebbe essere una canzone di libertà, come se fosse un canto funebre. Porteranno infatti il lutto per il povero Boxer, il cavallo più laborioso il cui motto è ‘’lavorerò di più’’ e ‘’Napoleon ha sempre ragione’’. Dalla sua morte gli animali impareranno cosa significa rinunciare alla propria capacità di decisione… non seguire le idee altrui senza porsi delle domande …
Lasciamo
dunque che George Orwell ci comunichi la sua visione sul mondo moderno, e noi
ascoltiamolo più e più volte … I latini, che già conoscevano la nostra
durezza di comprendonio dicevano: repetita iuvant.
